How
long will it take me to tan?
Everyone
is individual and the time taken to achieve a tan depends on individual
skin types. Just as a holiday tan.
All
new customers are given a thorough consultation to enable our qualified
and experienced staff to assess individual tanning history and skin
types. This will determine the most appropriate tanning programme to
achieve the best results in the shortest time. At all times customer
safety is the main priority. Customers start with low exposure time of 4
- 6 minutes rising to 10 - 12 minutes as their tan develops. Whilst
building a tan we recommend 3 tanning sessions per week for the first 3
weeks allowing 48 hours between each session. Dependant on skin type,
most customers reach their tanning peak after about one and a half hours
of regular tanning, approximately 7 - 10 sessions.
What
makes me go brown?
All
skin types contain quantities of the pigment melanin. Naturally darker
skins contain more melanin than fair skins. The key to a tan is to
produce more of this natural pigment. When the skin is exposed to UVB
light, cells called melanocytes in the deeper dermis layer of the skin
produce increased amounts of melanin, the tanning pigment. This is then
transferred to the top layer of skin, the epidermis. UVA acts upon the
melanin near the surface by oxidising it. This turns the melanin brown
and creates what we know as a tan. The melanin absorbs some of the UVA
and stops it reaching the more sensitive lower layers of the skin.
Isn't
tanning dangerous? Won't it give me skin cancer?
As
with most things in life it is a question of moderation. The real damage
to skin occurs as a result of burning and while this must be avoided
there is now more evidence supporting the positive effects of moderate
exposure to UV light under controlled and supervised conditions, such as
at Simply Tanning. The real risks are the excesses of sun exposure
particularly to those people who get very little natural sun for most of
the year then blast themselves on their annual holiday.
In
addition to looking good and feeling great sporting a healthy looking
tan, regular exposure to UV light has a number of positive effects on
general well being. For example sunlight increases the heart rate,
reduces lactic acid and increases vitamin D, essential for the
production of calcium needed for healthy bones and teeth. Sunlight helps
to lower blood sugar and is excellent for the treatment of skin
complaints such as eczema and psoriasis. More recent research into
disorders such as Seasonal Affective Disorder ( SAD ) has proven that
sunlight significantly improves the symptoms and quality of life for
sufferers.
So
if I get a tan before my holiday does that mean I won't burn?
While
a tanned skin will help protect from burning by absorbing some of the
sun's rays, you should be aware that exposure to direct sunlight should
always be treated with extreme caution, particularly in regions where
the sun is more powerful than we are used to or during midday when the
sun is directly overhead.
Therefore
always use a sun lotion with a suitable sun factor for the conditions to
which you are exposed.
Will
my skin age prematurely?
Too
much exposure to UV light can indeed increase the risk of developing
premature fine lines and wrinkles. That is why at Simply Tanning we
always recommend the use of quality lotions with premium skin care
properties which help to fight of the free radicals that cause this
condition.
Constant
tanning will naturally dehydrate skin. That is why at Simply Tanning we
always supply our customers with complimentary moisturiser for use
immediately after tanning. Moisture is the single most important
ingredient for healthy, supple skin.
Must
I always use a tanning lotion?
Using
a quality tanning lotion not only helps reduce premature skin aging and
skin damage, it greatly improves the quality of the tanning result by
increasing the amount of melanin produced in the skin. Customers who
regularly tan with a quality lotion will reach their tanning peak faster
and with less UV exposure than those customers who do not. Because
healthy skin tans best, the hydrating and vitamin properties contained
in good tanning lotions will ensure greater longevity of the tan and
therefore better overall value for money.
A
quality tan is more than just the colour of the skin; it is also about
skin well being.
I
have a great tan on my body but my legs do not seem to be tanning. Why
is this?
The
two most difficult areas to tan are the face and lower legs. This is due
to lower levels of natural melanin, the tanning pigment, being present
in these areas. Our VT2000 tanning machines have a special facial panel
integrated into the top of the lamp, which delivers powerful, but gentle
facial tanning. The machines are fitted with a customer lift which
ensures that even the shortest customers are raised to the optimum
tanning position. This ensures not only the face is at the right height
for the facial panels but that the lower legs are raised a few inches
above the bottom of the tanning lamp where the UV output is higher
compensating for lesser amounts of melanin.

I
never tan in the sun. Will I be able to tan in your machines?
If you do not tan in the sun then you are unlikely to tan on indoor systems. Your skin is likely to be sensitive to sunlight and we strongly recommend you do not use tanning equipment.

We offer a money back guarantee if you are not entirely happy with your tan, so long as you have followed the programme and advice given for your skin type.
We maintain computerised tanning history records on every customer so that we can ensure that our customers never over expose. Our experienced staff control the exposure times so that you are never at risk of burning.
